So much for a day off
Yup had a day off from going into college today, not that its really much of a day off. I've spent most of it doing house chores and researching my contextual studies.
Speaking of which last Friday we had our presentations and submissions for the proposal. I was really pleased with the response my classmates gave me and I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone's studies take shape. There's quite a few projects that can mingle and work together which is really great, whilst still remaining individual.
On the Tuesday we had our personal graduation plan presentations although they went well the real climax was afterwards with the results of our studio practice one. So happy to say I've passed but I know I can progress and do better.
Right that's enough for now. I'm hoping to post later about my current contextual studies and the findings so far. I've been watching loads of videos mainly sourced on YouTube of interviews with Kim Noble, Truddi Chase and other people with DID more commonly known as multiple personality disorder. I'll link these videos in the next post for the few people who have taken a slight interest in this area of my studies.

Back to the game
Well were officially back at college today and most of the fun and games are going to have to stop which is quite sad to be honest.
Myself and Lisa decided since the room would be locked from us to venture to Glasgow to see if there were any information on live briefs or free arty mags. I officially think we were looking in an alien place seeing as we couldn't find a single thing. Sadly my trip to Glasgow had to work around the strange delayed train times but within the 2 hours spent there it seemed a bit of a waste of time.
Nothing at the galleries were of any interest to me its more historic Glasgow and architecture, but not even cool architecture just rather mundane works. Poor show Glasgow.
Well I've got an hour to kill on this train so what else can I blog about.
Right well the new brief, there isn't one. 15 weeks of our own individual study and practice in which we have to research, resolve and submit a suitable plp and brief. I'm thinking mainly of incorporating my contextual studies into this new brief.
One thing I have to do is finalise my proposal for contextual studies, I think that by tweeking it a touch more both projects can be more efficient to work on because quite frankly atm its like my gran's pea soup which I'm sure churches used as cement and mortar back in the day...
Regardless I have my mental to do list for the rest of my day. Mainly being to head back to college, hopefully have a chat to Paul about my application form for Stirling, another driving lesson then a cramming session of research and finalising my presentation and contextual studies proposal.
Maybe I should stock up on pain killers for the numerous headaches I'm going to have...

Something awesome this way comes
Every so often I come across a cool video that has nothing to do with my specialism or focus of study. I couldnt even relate it towards my Contextual Studies. However Im adoring my latest find to the point Ive ordered the book for my collection. Its called Word as Image (and yes that link will take you to its facebook site)
Its a fantastic piece of graphic work based on typography created by Ji Lee. Animation of the video below was by Bran Dougherty-Johnson. Sound by Joel Pickard.
The basis of the entire project
Challenge: Create an image out of a word, using only the letters in the word itself.
Rule: Use only the graphic elements of the letters without adding outside parts.
Why is it I think many graphics students may find this interesting, even video students for the youtube piece... I should really send this to Enzo perhaps :p Or even my fellow classmate Sharon :p

The Alloa Campus Final Piece
Well I guess its time I got my finger out and actually blogged about the final piece I created as a response to the new Alloa Campus.
So here it is :p
Artist Statement
So here it is :p
I feel with regards to this project I have designed a piece which brings some of Alloas history into the clean and modern campus. The work is visually textured which is what I felt the new building lacked through its clean lines and design. However it does not deter nor distract from the architecture, as the piece, even though large in scale will be situated in a very open area therefore in my view will break up the constant white walls throughout the building.
The work created will be a large vinyl transfer onto the wall located in the “Flexible Learning Space” Between the doors for the Tower Suite rooms A203 and A202. Located in the Second Floor in the balcony overlooking the Learner Centre.

Artist Statement
This is a design proposal for the new Alloa Campus. In my own opinion the new building lacked age and seemed almost out of place amongst Alloa.
The town has a rich history in its industry of glass making and weaving along with its docks, coal and silver mines, the town is dotted with historical buildings. The town was built on hard work and has a historic and rich texture. The design I am presenting. Is that of the Ochil Hills, a view which is boasted strongly but sometimes hard to view directly at the campus. Constructed of Alloa’s rich history and textures.
The new campus can sometimes be too new. Its expanse of bare white walls needs to be broken up and the whole building needs some form of texture and roughing up. This design gives the building the visual texture I feel it requires, whilst still being quite minimalist in terms of it just being black and white.

In a larger scale of work and indeed the proposed area for its placement I feel that the open space can handle something like a full wall illustration it wouldn’t take over the area but it would give some form of finish to the flexible learning spaces environment I propose the work to be placed in.

Some more curious discoveries.
First of all Id like to share with you a video I came across today entitled "One Plastic Beach" its basically a documentry piece from Richard Lang and his wife Judith Selby Lang. Video available here at vimeo.com
"Richard Lang and Judith Selby Lang have been collecting plastic debris off one beach in Northern California for over ten years. Each piece of plastic Richard and Judith pick up comes back to their house, where it gets cleaned, categorized and stored before being used for their art. The couple make sculptures, prints, jewelry and installations with the plastic they find washed up, raising a deeper concern with the problem of plastic pollution in our seas"

Secondly id like to share with you a new found love. Ive already ordered a couple bottles to experiment with but if your interested in photography and the process of developing photography, or perhaps even if your interested in printmaking, fashion textiles or even painting. You should check out this product.

Lumi is a photosensitive dye or ink which goes on clear and when exposed to sunlight colours. The untouched ink then gets washed off leaving you with a permenant image.
Im not sure what I would ever use it for atm but it would be great to experiment with perhaps with perhaps tracing the movement of the sun, even letting go with some sunlight drawings. It could be a great idea to even trace a days weather and may become a documentary series. Who knows the potential of this product. Its kinda like another type of smart materials which are available on the market today.The video available from Vimeo gives you some great ideas to try out so if your a student looking for something similar to this product let me know ill bring it into college whenever it arrives and we can experiment with it :p
The last video I want to share with you is something I came across by sheer chance. Its called "Goldfish Salvation" and I bloody love it.

Is just bloody awesome. I honestly wish I could paint the way he does let alone come up with a drawing idea to put his process of resin use to experimentation. Its just such a wonderful series of work which Id personally love to own a piece of.
I suppose what first attracted me to his work is that Ive used the imagery of a Goldfish, albeit a dead one. To do a piece of work in my HND.
Check out his work I promise it will if your into painting, sculpture, installation or still life creation. Or hell even if your into Goldfish. You will love his work.
Anyways Im currently awaiting on some goodies Ive ordered from http://www.artstore.co.uk/ For years Ive wished for the Artstore located in Glasgow to have a store and now they do... so happy btw... And with free delivery when you spend over £40 (which I found rather easy to do) You cant really lose. Plus loads of stores are having decent sales especially online.
